Adoption Procedures
Adopting a Golden from MAGRR is very special...for you, for us, and for the dogs! From the moment they enter our program, until the day they reach your loving arms, these Goldens are our babies, so we have taken many precautions to ensure that the right dog is matched with the right family.
Here is how our adoption process works: 1. We ask that you first fill out, with as much detail as possible, the online or printable adoption application. We must have an application on file before we can discuss any of our Goldens. Our application is lengthy, but the more information you provide, the easier it will be to select the appropriate dog for you, your family, and your lifestyle. 2. Next, we check your veterinarian references and review your application. Vet references are important because they are an indicator as to how a perspective adopter will care for their new Golden. Heartworm preventative is extremely important, as approximately 40% of the Goldens entering the MAGRR program are heartworm positive. The treatment is very expensive to MAGRR as well as painful and stressful for the dogs. We do check your references so PLEASE notify your vet's office that a representative from MAGRR will be calling and give your permission to release the information to us. 3. After reviewing the application and talking with your vet, we will call you for a brief phone interview, and to schedule a time for one of our volunteers to do a home visit. These take anywhere from 1/2 to one hour, and this helps us get to know you better. Often, a volunteer will bring one of their personal dogs to observe your interaction and to give you an idea of the commitment that you are making. This is a great opportunity for you to ask questions. 4. Once the home visit is complete, the volunteer will discuss the visit with our adoption team. Our adoption coordinator will contact you to discuss the various Goldens in our program and which ones would fit your lifestyle. You will then be put in contact with some of the foster families. 5. Once you and the foster team have agreed on an appropriate dog, you will be required to pay the adoption fee and sign our MAGRR contract. 6. Then, you begin to love that angel wrapped in golden fur, and the new life begins!
